   1 What is Citizenship
  • To understand the nature of the Islam and Citizenship Education (ICE) project and the pupils’ role within it
  • To discuss what pupils know about citizenship
  • To begin to explore citizenship from an Islamic perspective
2 Guidelines for Engaging in Dialogue
  • To explore pupils the ground rules for engaging in dialogue
  • To explain that these ground rules apply whenever you are engaging in dialogue
  • To understand that Islam encourages dialogue in order to seek the truth and to build relationships
3 Critical Enquiry and Research
  • To provide students with research and enquiry skills
  • To establish that Islam encourages research and enquiry
4 School Councils and Shura
  • To explore the nature of citizenship in the context of the school and to show that this is similar to what goes on in the local and national government.
  • To provide some examples of shura and show how this helps to build a stable and happy community
5 Active Citizenship
  • To discuss and understand "active citizenship"
  • To demonstrate that active citizenship is part of  the Islamic tradition
  • To explore the relationship between British Muslims and the global Muslim community – the ummah
6 Volunteering And Giving Charity
  • To understand why volunteering and giving charity is important for Muslims
  • To appreciate that volunteering and charity are key components of good citizenship
7 Dealing with Racism
  • To understand that Islam and Citizenship condemn all forms of racism and teach equality for all humanity
  • To examine the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) sermon (at Arafat) as a perfect vehicle for these teachings
8 Equality Issues: Roles of Men and Women
  • To know that Islam and citizenship insist on gender equality
  • To explore what Islam says about the rights and responsibilities of men and women in the modern world
9 Resolving Conflict
  • To understand the nature  of conflict
  • To teach a range of techniques about settling conflicts in a friendly way
  • To learn the Islamic  method of resolving conflict
10 Dealing with Conflict
  • To reinforce the idea that conflicts should be resolved peacefully
  • To learn about the meanings of the word jihad
  • To learn Islam and the Geneva Convention lay down very strict rules about the conduct of war
  • To reinforce the command that suicide is haram
11 Tolerance, Respect and Love for Humanity
  • To understand the concept of tolerance, respect and love for humanity
  • To learn that tolerance, respect and love are qualities of a good Muslim and are key citizenship values
12 Community Cohesion
  • To understand that Britain is made up of diverse religious, ethnic and cultural communities
  • To learn that diversity should be seen as unifying, not a divisive force.
  • To understand that different communities have valuable contributions to make towards the betterment of society
  • To understand what the term "Community Cohesion" means
13 The Constitution of Medina – A Multifaith Society
  • To learn about the world’s first attempt to lay down the principles for a multifaith society
  • To appreciate that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged all people living in Madinah to exercise their rights and fulfil their responsibilities.
14 Living and Working with Others
  • To understand that Islam teaches tolerance and respect towards people of all faiths and those of no faith
  • To examine the multi-faith nature of the UK population

  • To understand that individuals have multiple identities, and we should not have to choose one identity over another
  • To understand there are religious, ethnic, cultural and national identities
  • To understand that Islam teaches that no nation is better than another but the best are those who are righteous

  • To understand that there is diversity within Islam
  • To learn that good Muslims do not look down on other Muslims, regardless of the groups they belong to
